Local Team with Nationwide Responsibilities

The Boone County Fire Protection District serves its local community. It also responds at the state and national level to support search and rescue missions, structural collapses, and natural disasters.

To better support these missions, Jason Warzinik set out to find a vendor. He needed someone willing to work with their team and its unique needs in the field.

A Much-Needed Upgrade

While the Boone County Fire Protection District was already operating with a vehicle for its missions, it was small, cramped, and lacked critical features. They needed something to supplement the current vehicle. Something with more storage, more capabilities, and room to work.

So, Jason set out on a mission of his own. He spoke with multiple vendors but quickly realized that Draxxon was the best team for the job.

Hamilton County STARS received a government grant, and had a unique opportunity to find the right command vehicle for its various rescue services. Clay Ingle from STARS, has over 40 years of experience in rescue operations, and knew the exact solution needed for his team. After working with Draxxon to obtain a DX-1000 Mobile Command Vehicle (MCV), the STARS team now has complete accountability for their team when they lead rescue operations.

High Expectations to Support Highly Important Mission

The Hamilton County Special Tactics and Rescue Services, Inc. (STARS) provide special tactical and technical support to area fire, rescue and police services throughout Chattanooga, Hamilton County Tennessee and the surrounding area. The STARS Team is a support group of the Hamilton County Emergency Services.

As their website states, they have responded to over 500 missions, supporting:

Clay Ingle is Chief of the Hamilton County STARS, and has seen a lot in his decades of experience. When it came time to find a new vehicle, he had high expectations.

An Exciting Command Vehicle Opportunity

The opportunity came for Ingle to assess options for a new vehicle when a government grant came through, allowing for an upgrade.

Clay was thrilled to upgrade from the STARS’ 2001 van to a support vehicle that met their requirements for a command center.

Clay explained that accountability was his number one priority. In the rescue field means being able to account for each individual that’s out on the mission.

His vision for the MCV was to have a section dedicated solely to accountability, which was achieved through the Draxxon DX-1000.

Clay explained that they used the entire back of the DX1000 for accountability.

“This allows us to constantly keep up with all of the people who are out and track each person,” he said. “An infinite commander will be inside the MCV and be informed on where every single person is.”

“Having the accountability station was essential for us, and it works exactly as we’d hoped,” Clay said.

While the back of the DX-1000 is used for accountability, it also has the exterior drivers side front for a briefing area. Over the last six weeks, Elizabeth Police Departments UAS Unit has been deploying a Drone as a First Responder (DFR) program. Detective Luis Figueiredo has been leading a team of pilots who are actively deploying to 30+ calls a day, never “keeping the UAS on the ground for longer than ten minutes.” DFR is designed to yield the same benefits as a manual drone program; it separates the UAS from the response time of getting a trained pilot on scene. Paladin has helped departments set up their programs in 911 dispatcher centers, police headquarters real-time crime centers, but never did we expect to set one up outside in the parking lot!

With the Draxxon van, EPD is able to operate the UAS on one computer and have 4 different screens to show the PIC the information they need on any given mission. One screen has a full screen mode of the video feed and the one below has the full controls able to be manipulated by a keyboard and mouse. The PIC primarily uses a touch screen computer to control the movements of the UAS. One screen has minute by minute wind and weather readings. The one below has RadarBox, a website that shows all aircraft in the area and their altitudes. One of the greatest advantages the DFR program has seen operating out of the Draxxon van is that Knighthawk lands 10 feet from the door. The pilot simply walks outside, swaps the battery in 30 seconds, waits two minutes for it to come online, and then resumes flying.
